Scope and Standard of Practice for ABG Doulas

As an ABG postpartum doula, you provide non-clinical, evidence-based support to families during the early postpartum period. Your role includes:

Services Rendered

  • Offering physical, emotional, and informational support to parents and families.

  • Listening without judgment, validating feelings, and supporting the emotional well-being of the whole family.

  • Educating and supporting families around breastfeeding, bottle feeding, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.

  • Providing evidence-based information about early parenting, such as infant sleep, soothing, babywearing, and feeding.

  • Performing practical tasks to ease this translation time, such as simple meal preparation, light household organization, errands, and sibling care.

  • Encouraging clients to make informed choices that reflect their values and circumstances.

  • Supporting understanding of normal postpartum physical and emotional changes.

  • Encouraging families to seek medical care when appropriate and referring to qualified professionals as needed.

Limits of Practice
ABG doulas do not:

  • Perform clinical tasks or assessments for the person who has given birth, the baby, or any other family member.

  • Diagnose conditions, offer second opinions, or give medical advice.

  • Make decisions for the family or impose personal values or goals.

  • Discourage families from their parenting or feeding choices.

  • Interfere with the medical care provided by licensed professionals.
