#1 Reason to Not Fear Competition in Doula Work

When I first started out as a doula, I went to a local doula meeting full of questions AND emotions. I was super nervous about how the other established doulas would react to me. Would they think I wasn't good enough? Would they feel threatened? Would they be supportive of me?
I didn't know what to expect, but I knew that getting support from other professionals in the community was going to be essential for me to build my business and community. Spoiler: That first group actually wasn’t a good fit. They held only one training in high regard and it wasn’t the one I took. Instead of staying stuck in this frustration, I joined in with some other doulas to start our own doula association. (This association is still successfully supporting doulas today!)
The More Great Doulas, the Better
Finding my support system was my push in the right direction!
The truth that those first doulas did not see is that the more doulas who are doing a great job, the more great jobs there are for all of us!
This is my #1 reason why we should not focus on competition in doula work. When other people offer quality, compassionate services, it makes a good name for doulas in general, not just for that one doula or that one agency. The more great things pregnant and postpartum people know about doulas and the valuable services we provide, the better!
As I’ve said many times before, networking is a crucial part of building a successful doula business. As you get to know other professionals, you establish trust and rapport. These are people you will refer to and vice versa! When potential clients come to me, I am able to connect them with the right person for their needs if it’s not me. And when another doula refers to me, it makes me feel like a rock star!
I know it can be scary when there are lots of other people offering similar services in your area. But here's the thing: As long as you're doing your job well and providing great service, there will be clients who need and appreciate you!
Additionally, in regards to my initial negative experience, there are many great training organizations and everyone should take the one that feels right for them (and I say this as an experienced doula who created and runs her own international postpartum doula certification program).
